Buyer's Guide: Interviewing DJs

Disc jockeys can be the life of the party. They entertain guests and set the tempo of the event. Experience is the number one attribute of a great DJ. Other than expertise, there may be other concerns you have or questions to be answered. While interviewing your DJ, consider the following:

DJ Tip #1 - What's the charge?
Pricing for DJ services vary, so it is important to receive quotes from several sources before making a final decision. The size, duration, time of year, and venue of your event may determine the pricing.

DJ Tip #2 - Are you insured?
No one should be responsible for the DJ's equipment other than them. Ask if they are fully insured, and if they can provide proof of liability.

DJ Tip #3 - What about your equipment?
Inquire about the equipment. You do not have to be a tech wizard to realize if the disc jockey has prime equipment or secondhand junk. You are hosting a private occasion; you do not want the entertainment to be lacking.

DJ Tip #4 - What about the music?
Ask the disc jockey services about the music. Can they provide the music? Can they play the songs on your list? Do they take requests from guests? Does the DJ have experience emceeing the type of event you're hosting? Knowing the answer to these questions can give you a better idea of how well the DJ can service you.

DJ Tip #5 - How long does it take you to set up?
This question can reflect on the experience of the DJ. If they have done your variety of affair before, then they will know how long it will take to set up and close down.

DJ Tip #6 - What about your attire?
The disc jockey's dress may be an issue. Are you comfortable with them arriving to your affair in jeans and a t-shirt, or would you rather them wear something more formal? Discuss this subject before the event.

DJ Tip #7 - Do you do contracts?
Make sure you hear a resounding "yes" from your disc jockey service. Contracts are important. You do not want the entertainment for your affair hanging in the balance of an oral contract. You want to ensure the service will be provided.
